Overall, even when not talking only about Doom, I feel like the total conversion mods part of Steam is hugely underutilized, and it sucks, there is so many good mods I would have never head of without that : Downfall ( Slay the spire ), Aperture Tag ( Portal 2 ), Chronicles of Myrtana ( Gothic 2 )... A vanilla take on the survival horror Ghoul's Forest series that, through loads of Doom engine trickery, manages to play differently each and every time. Goes heavier on the jumpscares than other wads in this list, but still manages to be scary even without them. Speed of Doom. Joshy and Darkwave collaboration. Lot of variety in here but the gameplay will keep you on your toes. My favorite maps were from Darkwave. Behemoth. Single map. Great architecture, variety of gameplay, lots of surprises. Resurgence. The follow up to Speed of Doom but only one Darkwave map this time around.Of course, on that topic, the recent Bicycle Mystery wad was was pretty nice too - even in single player. EDIT: Oh, and how could I forget so much from '97 - forgot to mention Talosian and Eternal Doom. Both certainly deserve attention. Oh, and Cyberdreams ('98) and Batman ('99) also. Really most Doom WADS work with Brutal it’s just the difficulty increase that can cause problems. Best ones I’ve played: Ancient Aliens, Vanguard, & Valiant, just to name a few. You’re going to want to dial back the difficulty though when playing them. Been playing through Doom 2 Dark World.
