I did however read the suicide squad issues that came before it and while I don't think it's required, it enhances it a bit. Overall it's a pretty self contained story that's a lot of fun to read. It leads into justice league of America which I do not recommend at all. I was tempted by it with the way JL vs SS ends and regret spending the money.
